This supplemental workshop program, created specifically for the NAF YOP, is designed to support new Academy teams as they develop their outreach programs. The program provides participating teams with a finished product they can use to support recruitment, communications, and network-building as they launch new Academy programs.

Five lead sites from around the country participated in this workshop in the spring of 2006.

The Capturing a Career video project, developed by Pearson Foundation, allows high school students to present information on their skills, academic and personal experiences, and career ambitions in a short digital film they create themselves. Using interview footage and supporting images, each participant assembles a video presentation that tells a story of skill development, personal growth, and achievement in the classroom and the workplace.

Participating students can use their finished films for electronic portfolio and end-of-year capstone projects or in support of an employment or application process for post-secondary opportunities.

Using the digital storytelling process, Academy teachers can integrate media projects in their lesson planning to focus on required content frameworks and develop student skills with writing, communication, critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration. Organized as a supplemental instructional tool and best practice, this approach to teaching and learning allows instructors to meet traditional learning objectives while providing a rich, hands-on media and presentation experience for their students.
